The Importance of Prostate Health Checks

More than half a million new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year world wide and the cancer is the direct cause of over 200000 deaths. More significantly the incidence of the disease is increasing with a rise of 1.7 per cent over 15 years.

Once a taboo subject prostate problems including cancer prostatitis and general age-related prostate enlargement (known as Benign Prostate Hyperplasia or BPH) are now recognised as a major health problem. While some opinions vary as to the cause age-related BPH appears to be influenced by the conversion of the male hormone testosterone to a more aggressive form dihydrotestosterone or DHT that causes the cells in the prostate to increase in number and size causing the gland to enlarge. Because a specific enzyme 5-alpha reductase is involved in this conversion reducing the availability of this enzyme through the use of specific compounds including some fatty acids appears to help prevent the formation of DHT.

A recent Swedish study published in the International Journal of Cancer showed that men who eat one portion of salmon per week are 43 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who eat no salmon. The study links the apparent benefits to the EPA and DHA omega-3 content of the fish and while there may be some genetic elements involved the anti-inflammatory action of these two fatty acids are believed to play a significant role in maintaining prostate health.
